John E. Ford Elementary School Reviews

My son's reading and math skills are way above average. He has attended school here since kindergarten and he has excelled each year. He speaks spanish pretty fluently. The only problem I see there is the science curriculum, it leaves something to be desired. Overall John E Ford is the best school around.

The school atmosphere is chaotic and disorderly.

My daughter is graduating this year from the 8th grade montessori program. She has excelled in the small middle school environment. Her teacher's have been able to be personal mentors to her and keep in daily contact with me. The school is beginning to rally from the chaotic merger of two magnet programs. I would highly recommend this program. In fact my three year old will be starting soon in the prek program.

John E. Ford is undergoing a major transistion this year, as a result some extracurricular activities are not happening. My son is enrolled in the Spanish Immersion program, after attending Montessori for PK-3 through K, he loves his teacher, the language, and is learning a great deal of Spanish. I am excited about the prospect of my child becoming bilingual and would recommend this program to others. However, I would also recommend that students start out in an English, preferrably Montessori, kindergarten in order to secure reading skills and some general knowledge.

My daughter is enrolled here for kindergarten. She has learned Spanish well. However, the climate of the school is chaotic and disordely. She spends many a day watching TV, not going to recess, and hearing teachers yell. The principal is not proactive, there are ants crawling around the cafeteria and classrooms, and there is not enough classroom and resource space for all of the students attending. She will not be returning to John Ford next year.

Due to the merger of the Spannish immersion school and the montessori program, this school has suffered from serious growing pains. While we are hopeful the second year will be a significant improvement, it has been frustrating to see our children in a chaotic environment without any of the community builders (like PTA and family nights until February!) that make a school a community of learners. We are struggling with the decision of whether or not to keep sending our children for the Spanish Immersion program. We believe it has amazing potential, but the coming year will determine whether or not this 2 programs can come together and become a great learning community. There have been few extracurricular events, or functions to draw families to the school.

John E. Ford has been a wonderful educational experience for my son (who is a third grader). The teachers communicate with the parents on a daily basis and always encourage parent- participation. John E. Ford has really given my child a confidence boost, which is very important. Kudos to them for the warm, friendly, family environment. Academically, they are positioned among the top elementary institutions in Jacksonville and Florida (the nation even.) I couldnt ask for a better school!
