When my daughter was in the sixth grade, there were school notes that we could use to monitor their assignments. In seventh grade, parents had to chase after teachers just to communicate. For all the kids who are presently attending there, good luck. I have been very disappointed in the communication. Issues that I believe to need attention must not be important to the vice principal or teachers because I have not heard from the ones I have tried to contact. It is very frustrating. Some teachers are excellent. Others are quite disorganized and not interested in parent involvement. Communication with teachers is difficult because some use email, others don't. Some used school notes, some don't. Some have emails at the duvals schools site while others are still on dreams begin here. It is frustrating for parents who are used to enjoying easy access to teachers and administration. The athletic facilities are poor and the coaching is questionable. They offer many clubs, but the activity bus takes 2 hours to drop my kids near home. The work is hard and there is allot of homework, but we do fun experiments and we have viking days (viking days are days when classes are 30 min. And at the end of the day we just hang out with friends). The teachers are really nice and they all have different personalities so your bound to like one of them. It has become my home away from home, and darnell cookman pushes me to work harder and better. I'm on the Gifted Runics Team, and I am very appreciative of my teachers, Mr. Douthett (Science), Ms. Stansel (US History), Ms. Bolton (French), Mrs. Clancy (English), and Mr. Felice (Geometry). They are unbelievable. Also, Mrs. Looper, a teacher for the 6th grade Eagles, is phenomonal. She is probably the most hard-working teacher alive. She does so much for her students. I absolutely love this school, and it has prepared me for life and college. Next year, I am going to be attending Stanton, in the IB program, because of this wonderful school that pushed me to the limit in the gifted program.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: decline 2008-10-16 “My son is a gifted SOMA student at Cookman. from preschool to third grade he attended private school and was taught with the Beka system. Public school has been a challenge for him in certain subjects but he is finally starting to get comfortable. His writing skills have vastly improved. The teachers are awesome. He's on the Eagles team and I really appreciate the communication between Teacher and parents. When I got his first Progress Report I almost fainted, but his teachers are very helpful and concerned enough to help identify his deficiencies and offer tips on improving his grades. I utilize phone calls, emails and Schoolnotes.com. I am very pleased with the group of teachers that my son have. I give this school and the administrative staff Five stars. I guess it was just the change of schools, not knowing anyone, and I had some personal problems at home as well. But, coming back to 7th grade was AWESOME and of course I was a Wolf (best team in the world). My teachers Ms.Parker, Ms.Heaton, Mrs.Dellacrosse, and Mr.Pullen all prepared me greatly for eighth grade I am having barely any difficulties and I owe it to them. The only thing I would have to say about Darnell is people gossip...ALOT and it can really be annoying. Most of the students are nice you just really have to get to know them. We moved here a few years ago and every since I feel like we have been misled by these schools including magnet schools. First coast sent my son a brochure inviting him to join the AVID program when he was in the eighth grade. I was so happy because we were at a magnet school and had applied to Paxon but got put on a waiting list which meant he would have to attend his neighborhood school which was FCH, well he had to apply for this program and month's later we recieved a letter stating that he had been excepted we were so happy. The program was supposed to be for students who were college bound but needed help organizational skills and study habits. My son who is 11 and in the 6th grade has to memorize all these bones by the end of this school year for his Medical elective. Tell me if this is not advanced. This school did nothing to help my child. The administration is laid back, and do more socializing than what is expected. The wolves team should utilize email address, phone numbers and etc. to inform parents of academics as well. I felt the need to withdraw my child from this school this year because the teachers and administration displayed their lack of concern in helping me help my child get back on track. Academically, it's fine but the principle, security and administrators all need to do a better job. The extracurricular activities are fun and all have marvelous teachers, though students do not seem to be very interested. Parents are very much involved with the school from their child maintaining their grades to putting school events together. I've been attending Darnell since the 6th grade and now I am in the 8th and have been in the gifted program all three years. I think there needs to be a better system and more parent input on the afternoon drop off service. I sent in a letter last year with no response on the bussing situation . The academics were challenging but very well worth it. The teachers were highly skilled, well organized and took pride in their work. I enjoyed working with them knowning we were striving toward the same goals for my child. I thank DCMS teachers and staff for giving her the confidence and prepartions she will need to go to the next level. At the time she was in the Medical Magnet and in the accelerated studies program. Dr. J. Rudolph was the Medical advisor and was a wonderful teacher. He inspired and challenged each of his students. All the teachers were there for the kids and went the extra mile. Advisors were wonderful and worked closely with the parents and kids. The foundation, my child received made it possible for her to continue on in Sr. High into the IB program. As a first year college student, my daughter was able to start as a second semester sophomore. But after the first 9 weeks...I felt I made the right decision. Darnell is truly a learning experience. They teach our children good study habits and they do try and make learning fun for the kids. My son has attended Darnell all 3 years. The teachers are great! However, I am now pleased that I took the chance. My daughter performs incredibly well with the project focus and cooperative learning. She is becoming very savvy about connecting with teachers when she needs help and clarification. She is forced to organize her time wisely without much guidance(due to a couple of weeks of poor performance/readiness for tests). I only wish that communication to parents were a bit more sophisticated (ie, online or via monthly all-inclusive event calendars). The great thing about DC is that the teachers get more serious as the students progress. Their personalty is just lined up in a way that they are teaching the correct grade level. DC has many extracurricular activities involving different things from Guitar club to band practice to newspaper club, to chess club. That isn't the half of them. My daughter wanted to go, so I let her. I thought to myself, 'We'll try it.' As soon as she got there, it took her a little while to get adjusted. But it was okay because it was just the kind of challende she needed. She had a lot of fun. The teachers really cared about her grades, as well as the other students' grades. I like Darnell-Cookman because the children get a good education, and at the same time, they have fun. I would definitely give this school an A.”
